Food Studies 11
We will discuss some of these topics throughout the semester. Some will involve your own research while others will be discussed as a new topic at the beginning of a class. Different viewpoints/perspectives will be shared through forms such as a socratic seminar or M.U.N. In many of the research components, we will be using guided or open inquiry but in all topics the focus will be on guiding the students to critically think about the topics.
This list is just examples and will be updated as the semester goes on. Occasionally we will pick an issue that is current in the news.
1. Does an apple a day truly keep the doctor away?
2. Should the Canadian Gov't issue warning labels (ie. can lead to cardiovascular diseases) on unhealthy foods just as they have with smoking.
3. Justify the rationale for eating dog
4. Should junk food be banned in Schools? Freedom of choice?
5. What are the positives/negatives of the Olympics having McDonalds and Coke as sponsors.
6. Compare and contrast the benefits of farmed salmon in British Columbia and the world.
7. What are the strengths and weaknesses of eating organic?
8. Examine the impact of energy drinks on the youth?
9. Should fast food chains such as McDonalds 'morally' change their menus?
10. Can eating healthy foods make you more beautiful/handsome?
11. To what extent should we be using genetically modified foods?
12. Do you think you can sustain your daily eating habits throughout your life?
13. Explain the reasons why we should all become vegetarians
14. Identify current food labeling practices and discuss ways to improve them
15. Identify current food safety issues and ways we can improve them
