Welcome! Food studies has come a long way in the past few years. Gone are the days of baking cakes, making chocolate chip cookies and rolling out pizzas. With unhealthy eating and sedentary lifestyles sky rocketing among the youth, it is imperative that students learn not only how to cook but how to cook nutritionally sound meals. Every effort is made in my classes to ensure that students are making not only foods that they’ll enjoy eating but also foods that are nutritionally beneficial to themselves. Of course we will make some students favourite sweets but we’ll learn about moderation with these foods. We’ll also look at how we can make some of our favourite foods (pizza, french fries, chicken nuggets, etc) actually healthy for you! As the students enter the later years Grade 9+, we start thinking critically about the world of food and how it impacts us daily. We source out where our food comes from and what is actually in it. We look at food through a global lens and the economical, moral, ethical, cultural and religious issues and celebrations that they bring about.
Sincerely,
Mr. McCallum
